This Lent has been a pretty big rough patch for me. But I wanted to celebrate how far I have come in a year today. This yoghurt maker is a present that mum got me and James for our engagement (even though James hates yoghurt). I eat yoghurt everyday. I have it in smoothies or in fruit. And it was one of the dairy items that I couldn't (and still haven't) 'cracked' (made entirely zero-waste). The only waste that comes from this yoghurt is the small sachet that the powder comes in. I even reuse the hot water in the container as much as possible so that I don't waste water. It takes 12 hours to make the yoghurt, and then it has to sit in the fridge for a bit. So patience and timing is key here. It makes about a litre which is what I used to buy in a Chobani container for a week. But I was thinking tonight about how this time maybe 10 years ago, I would have a yoghurt a night in a small plastic tub. Each of those tubs still exists and are either in a foreign country, probably not being recycled, or in landfill. But now, this one sachet that I use every week becomes my rubbish bin. That is approximately how much of my waste goes to landfill each week (actually this week, it probably wont even be full...). I need to remember that I have come quite far in a year, and I'm still wanting to do more.
Things I want to do more of
- make more of my own milk from almonds
- get rid of more of my jewellery (I don't wear it anyway)
- minimise my wardrobe (I have more clothes than I need)
- learn how to cook more with lentils
- get rid of TV from my life I can watch stuff online normally anyway)
- grow beans (my previous attempts died)
- grow strawberries (same as beans)
- grow lavender (same as strawberries and beans)
- make the switch from lavender water for my toner to rose water because it is easier to get on tap
- make my own pies and fish cakes
If you are reading this, I would greatly appreciate it if you held me to these things that I want to do, check up on me and see how I'm doing. :)
